Zhejiang Folk Art & Acrobatics General Troupe Co., Ltd. is located in Hangzhou, the national reputed “Paradise” and the world-famous scenic city. Its predecessor, Zhejiang Opera Troupe (Team), established in 1959, specialized in Suzhou Storytelling Performance and Ballad Singing. It was the key team in such circle at that time. From 1993, it began to run a farce troupe; from 1996, it began to enroll acrobatic talent; In February 1997, it was expanded to Zhejiang Folk Art & Acrobatics General Troupe after approved by Zhejiang Provincial Editorial Board and Department of Culture. The troupe has been a comprehensive provincial professional art performance troupe with 160 performers in total, including Zhejiang Opera Troupe, Zhejiang Acrobatic Troupe, Zhejiang Farce Troupe and Zhejiang Star Performance Company. Moreover, it is a productive entity with three art fields and an operational entity in performance. In 2005, it was awarded the title of “National Advanced Unit in Culture” by the National Ministry of Personnel and the Ministry of Culture. In May 2010, it became one of the first restructured troupes among Zhejiang provincial art troupes and its name was then changed into Zhejiang Folk Art & Acrobatics General Troupe Co., Ltd. (“the company” for short).
The company annually holds nearly 2,000 performances in average in China, and 100 performances in foreign countries and regions. It has created and performed large-scale dramas such as a large fantasy drama The Monkey King, acrobatic theme parties such as Hangzhou Story and Paradise Style, an acrobatic musical drama The Ugly Duckling, modern comic operas including Road Overturned and Cobbler Legend, cautionary tragicomedies Swan Robbery, modern light farce Little Village Story, a storytelling performance and ballad singing The Story of Cars and Holidays, medium-length storytelling The Devoted Fans and Mansion Without A Master and many other large-scale and small programs. The company has won numerous awards in the international and national art competitions: the newly established Zhejiang Acrobatic Troupe, with its artistic innovation and superb skills, has won the first award in the “Stage Magic Hands Show” of the 23rd World Magic Contest, gold prize in the “Future” group of the 26th French “Tomorrow” Acrobatics Festival & the 19th “Future” Acrobatics Festival, all the prizes in the 21st Italy Golden International Circus Festival, the highest award of “The President Prize of The Republic of France” and Program Gold Award in the 17th French Marcy International Acrobatics Festival 2009, gold prize in the 4th Russia International Circus Festival 2009, the first place of gold prize and the first place of silver prize in the 8th China Acrobatics (Magic) Contest 2010, and has obtained the Guinness World Record Certificate twice and many other outstanding achievements, attracting attention in the circle of Chinese Acrobatics. The company’s subsidiary, Zhejiang Opera Troupe is rejuvenated with more than half of the staff members replaced and has won “China Opera Peony Award” for three times in succession, and 25 prizes in the 4th China Suzhou Storytelling Performance and Ballad Singing Art Festival. The young Zhejiang Farce Troupe has also won many prizes in the National Opera Peony Award Contest as well as cross-talk sketch contests. Some of its staff members have been listed as “Famous Chinese Cross-talker” and invited to make programs for CCTV. Zhejiang Star Performance Company, by organizing and operating various large, medium and small sized performances, has also increased its influence and reputation.
